What is a mortgage in principle?

Updated September 2026England & Wales2 min read

The short answer

A mortgage in principle is a lender’s early indication of how much it may lend you. It isn’t a guarantee: the full application, credit checks and valuation come later. Many lenders use a soft credit check, but ask first.
